Since 1994, MES has been operating and maintaining the deicing system on behalf of the Maryland Aviation Administration. This involves monitoring and controlling the flow of stormwater and waste glycol runoff, via a series of actuated valves and pumping stations, to ensure that each respective fluid is diverted to the proper discharge or collection system. It also requires that all systems, subsystems, and components be fully operational 24/7 throughout the year, with special attention toward monitoring and maintenance during the cold-weather months (October – March), when declared deicing events produce the highest volume of waste glycol.
