Dana Aunkst, Director, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Chesapeake Bay Program

Mr. Aunkst has more than 34 years of experience working in environmental and regulatory programs in Pennsylvania in private industry and local and state government. During his tenure at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), which originally began in 1985, he served as Deputy Secretary for Field Operations, Deputy Secretary for Water Programs, Executive Deputy Secretary and as the Acting Secretary for the Agency. As the Deputy Secretary for Field Operations at DEP he oversaw over 1,400 full-time employees responsible for implementing environmental protection programs from six regional locations. As Executive Deputy Secretary for Programs, Aunkst directed the activities of more than 2,000 professional and technical staff engaged in all aspects of environmental protection. While serving as the Deputy Secretary for Water Programs, he oversaw programs for surface and groundwater quality, soil and water conservation, public water supplies, sewage facilities, point and non-point source discharges, flood protection and stream improvement. In this capacity, he led the 2016 change to resuscitate Pennsylvania’s Chesapeake Restoration effort by authoring Pennsylvania’s Chesapeake Bay Reboot Strategy.

Mr. Aunkst has also worked in private practice as a consulting environmental engineer, an industrial plant engineer, and for local government as a public works director. Mr. Aunkst holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Penn State University and is a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania.
