MES was established by the General Assembly in 1970 to assist with the preservation, improvement, and management of the quality of air, land, water, and natural resources, and to promote the health and welfare of the citizens of the State. In 2020, MES celebrated 50 years of service to the State of Maryland. The document below provides a timeline of some of the milestones along that 50-year journey and beyond. Today, MES employs over 700 teammates and operates more than 1,000 environmental projects across Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region.
