Poplar Island isn’t just an engineering marvel—it’s a thriving sanctuary for terrapin hatchlings. Within its restored wetlands, these young turtles enjoy abundant food and restored shorelines for safe nesting grounds that support their growth. Over two decades ago, the Maryland Port Administration (MPA) launched the Terrapin Education and Research Partnership (TERP) in collaboration with various partners across the state, including Maryland Environmental Service. Discover how this unique project is restoring an island rich in history while inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.
