The Prince George’s County Organic Composting Facility is a state-of-the-art composting operation that takes in around 70,000 tons of yard trim and food scraps each year from the 900,000+ residents of Prince George’s County.
Prince George’s County Department of the Environment began operations with MES in 1991, composting small quantities of residentially generated leaves and grass to create the exceptional soil compost Leafgro®. Over the next 30 years, the County steadily expanded its operations into the large, sophisticated facility in operation today.
Facility Operations
The Prince George’s County Organic Composting Facility (PGCOCF) has grown substantially since it began operating in 1991. In 2013, PGCOCF began a food scrap pilot program using a Gore® forced aeration, covered heap system. With this innovation, PGCOCF became the largest publicly-owned food scrap composting facility on the east coast.
In 2018, Prince George’s County took food scrap composting even further by constructing a 12-bunker, forced aeration system using Gore® covers. This gives the site the capability to process 32,000 tons of food scraps annually. Today, the facility takes in around 70,000 tons of combined yard trim and food scraps each year from Prince George’s County residents. This material is processed to create Leafgro Gold®, a high-demand compost product that is sold in Prince George’s County.
